Fred Thomas Drive Pavement Rehabilitation, Takapuna

Fred Thomas Drive was upgraded in late 2006 in conjunction with the New Zealand Transport Agencies Northern Busway Project. Bartley Consultants were commissioned by the former North Shore City Council to design the upgrade of Fred Thomas Drive from Takapuna Landing to Anzac Street. The design incorporated a southbound bus lane, on-road and off-road cycle lanes, improved pedestrian facilities and improved road drainage.

One of the challenges with this site was designing a pavement which wouldn't be significantly affected as a result of the ongoing settlement of landfill materials which underlie the road pavement. The pavement design incorporated a foamed bitumen base, which was a relatively new stabilisation treatment at the time, to provide a robust yet flexible base. The stabilisation treatment also helped to avoid any discontinuity of pavement materials and performance at the interface between the existing pavement and new widening.
